About Friends of Church Street

Welcome to the website and blog for Friends of Church Street. We are an organization that seeks to promote the historical significance of 96 Street in the McCauley neighbourhood (in Edmonton, Alberta), which is commonly known as Church Street. We are not a religious group nor affiliated with any one particular church.

We also seek to demonstrate to the City of Edmonton that there is community interest in officially designating Church Street as an historical location, and as such, is worthy of things such as plaques by some of the churches, welcome gates, and other forms of recognition.

96 Street has already been honoured with a plaque in 2010 from the Edmonton Historical Board. There are current public consultations and meetings under way with City Council to determine more distinction for Church Street.

The number of churches within such a short span of blocks has led to the urban legend that Church Street has been mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records – it is not currently, though a rumour persists that it was at one time. Church Street was mentioned on Ripley’s Believe It or Not for its high concentration of churches in the world.
